Hangover [hang-oh-ver] : Unpleasant symptoms that occur after excessive alcohol intake.
Can be identified by the “ashtray mouth”, the vomit on ones clothes, the ‘I never want to drink again’, the dislike for sunlight, the stranger in your bed… and the never ending need for water and aspirin.
Unfortunately I am cursed with the “Super Hangover Gene”… I learned about this when I started dating my husband back in 2010, who actually has the opposite. He NEVER gets hangovers… But thanks to Science, there is an explanation for this!
People who are less susceptible to having a hangover might have a greater risk for alcohol addiction. No matter how much they drink, they can magically shake off the previous night, meanwhile my head is in the toilet.
Since starting my Margarita seeking journey, I have been cautious. But some nights, I’m just feeling a really good recipe and it gets me. Before I know it… Multiple shots of tequila down the hatch and the next morning I’m wondering why the sun is hiding under my eyelids!
So let’s talk about Hangover Cures. Not just chugging pickle juice, but remedies that are backed by science and could possibly help you survive the morning after.
Eat a hearty breakfast
Although you may not feel like ingesting anything, a good breakfast may help with regulating blood sugar levels. Low blood sugar could be causing the nausea, fatigue and weakness. Fresh fruit is my go to! Bonus points if it’s cold from being in the fridge. Sometimes even just a piece of toast can help me feel better.
Hair of the Dog
I always considered this an old wives tale or myth, but there is evidence it can lessen hangover symptoms. The last thing I want to do, is drink more, but if you’re prone to hangovers like myself, you better learn to love Bloody Mary’s.
Get plenty of sleep
Drinking can cause disturbances in sleep and cause some people to get less rest, even though they were passed out for hours. Before I had children, sure I could spend all day laying around, snoozing, nursing my hangover. But sleeping in, is now a luxury of the past. Nowadays I have screaming babies to tend too, so go ahead and make fun of me for being in bed by 9 but you’ll find me bright eyed and cheery at 6 AM! Well I guess a pot of coffee will also do that to you…
This is more of a recommendation for either before or while you are drinking. Alcohol has a diuretic effect, causing loss of fluids and electrolytes. One glass of water for every alcoholic beverage consumed is a good rule of thumb.
Lets be real. The best cure for a hangover, is to avoid one. So be responsible and drink in moderation.
So meanwhile, I will continue to pray… “Please God… Cure my hangover and I promise I will never drink again. Also, please forgive me in advance for lying about never drinking again.”
